Why Choose Physiotherapy
When you choose a physiotherapist, you are choosing a highly skilled health care professional, with extensive medical knowledge about health, injury, illness, healing, and recovery.
Most physiotherapists have an undergraduate degree, followed by a Master’s of Physical Therapy (MPT). The MPT is an intensive, two-year program focusing on integrative learning about anatomy, pathology, physiology, kinesiology, and rehabilitation of the musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory and neurological systems.
As well, physiotherapists have comprehensive training on effectively communicating and collaborating with people, like patients or other health care professionals.
Physiotherapists complete 1200 hours of clinical training, meaning they spend a lot of time learning hands-on skills by working directly with patients under supervision.
In Manitoba, the College of Physiotherapists of Manitoba (CPM) regulates all physiotherapists who wish to practice in Manitoba. Physiotherapists must have a physiotherapy license to practice which is obtained through CPM once specific criteria are met. By regulating physiotherapists, CPM protects the public, ensures quality care, and strengthens physiotherapy’s role in healthcare. More information on physiotherapy regulation in Manitoba is provided below under, “Regulations”. (add hyperlink)
After finishing their university degree, all physiotherapists must pass an extensive written and oral National Physiotherapy Exam before they can practice without any supervision.
