Regulation

Regulation means that anyone calling themselves a physiotherapist has met specific education and training standards. This reduces the risk of unqualified people providing physiotherapy treatment, which could lead to injury or delayed recovery.

The College of Physiotherapists of Manitoba (CPM) handles complaints against physiotherapists and will act if a physiotherapist provides poor or harmful care. This gives patients a clear path to raise concerns and helps maintain trust in the profession.

Regulation also supports safe and effective treatment. Physiotherapists often work with people who have pain, injuries, or complex health conditions. Proper assessment and treatment require skill and judgment, and regulation helps ensure physiotherapists are competent to make those decisions.

Lastly, regulation helps integrate physiotherapy into the broader healthcare system. Being regulated allows physiotherapists to work more closely with physicians, nurses, and other providers, and can enable things like direct access to care or insurance coverage.

People are encouraged to contact the Registrar if they have questions regarding:

  • Qualifications of physiotherapists
  • Information about the standards of the profession
  • Concerns and/or complaints against physiotherapists
